humphrey's claim to being brother of william and drogo is stronger than the others, but i am not really convinced. there was an interregnum before he took power, one that seems to be a good place for an election (as is the traditional viking custom). conquered central italy from the holy roman empire. supposedly left the guardianship of his children to robert guiscard, who usurped their inheritance.
it is said that he appointed mauger and william as counts and also that he died of sickness, but see the page on robert guiscard for a discussion of possible motives for his murder by guiscard.
humphrey also had a son, abelard, that launched a failed revolt against guiscard.
